Welcome to the 6mm Alien Bugs
Page
So there I was wanting some real
6mm (1/300th) scale alien type vehicles
for wargaming with and I couldn't
find anything. So I thought I'd make
my own. I wanted some aliens that
used organic technology to create
tanks, planes and weapons. The design
I came up with was to have vehicles
that had a slug/fleshy membrane to
move on with a hard shell for the
main body. I also needed a name so
I went for "Cimexian" (I
found it in a book about insects).

For the first miniatures I sculpted
the whole thing in one go. The fleshy
slug like foot as well as the shell
top. This lead to an un-uniform shaped
to the miniatures but that soon became
part of their charm and fitted in
well with the concept that the vehicle
might well have been grown rather
than made in a factory. Pic 1 shows
the medium tank. I also didn't want
the weapons to just look like normal
gun barrels. So in the case of the
meduim tank I made a turret with two
openings which would act to fire out
whatever organic aliens would use
as projectiles.

After making several vehicles
in this style I decided for the bit
artillery type vehicles that I needed
to make the slug foot and wait for
that to cure before starting work
on the shell. Pic 2 shows the artillery
vehicle using this approach. It meant
that I could mak it look like the
foot was more under the body than
with the tanks.

Moving onto a bug walker seemed
the next thing to tackle. I made this
model (pic 3) in three parts. First
I made the legs sculpting around a
simple arch shaped wire armature.
The body came next with me leaving
part of the underneath of the body
for the arms to fit. The arms were
made the same way as the legs with
a wire armature . Again the shell
body style remains with the legs as
more of an unprotected flesh.

At this point I had put up a few pictures
on the web and offered to a few manufacturers
the model for production. Brigade
Models stepped up to produce them
at this point and also asked if I
would do some infantry to go with
the models. So I came up with the
infantry in Pic 4. In the end I made
two sizes one for normal infantry
and a larger size to act as powered
armour troopers.
I did start work on a different style
for organic vehicles but didn't get
beyond my initial greens as you can
see in picture5.

The entire range of Organic 6mm
aliens is available at Brigade
Models.
